One more thing. . .
Transiting Pallas Athene is sitting at 16Gem, exactly opposite Teharonhiawako at 16Sag. So. . . could this whole thought process have taken place prior to now? Maybe. I think "the teacher will appear when the student is ready", is more likely.
love your website, Chris!

I understand Les' problem with determinism, but the proof is in the pudding -or rather, details. Working with my own chart, I found the placement of the astroids to be very enlightening in respect to finding the "middle way". I have an exact quincunx between my Sun at 1Libra in the 4th and Pallas Athene (my primary archetype) at 1Pisces in the 9th. The Sun and Venus at 7Libra form a loose Yod with Ceres (nurturing grain)at 7 Taurus in the 11th. On a hunch, I decided to look at the midpoint 16Sag to see if there was anything there(asteroid, centaur, etc.). Much to my surprise and delight was Teharonhiawako at exactly 16Sag. This is exactly trine my Saturn/Pluto M.P. at 16 Leo in the 2nd. He was a benevolent, Iroquois creator deity with an opposite twin. (I'm a twin and have always been facinated with Native American mythology.) He was created from the bark of a tree (I live in WI because I'm a tree hugger); and gave the gift of maize to the land. I took over managing my family's business a couple of years ago -we own land in corn and soybean production in IA, and crop share with 7 tenants. I work from my home. My ability to run the business smoothly and profitably has gone a long way towards healing the riff with my father that occured when my twin died. So Les, in looking for a workable resolution to a quincunx, I found I was already working it well with help from Teharonhiawako. Determinism? --Maybe so, but I found it very reassuring.

I am currently reading the book. I had looked forward to it based upon my enjoyment of Ms. George's "Astrology for Herself". I'm not a professional, but I think I qualify as a somewhat well-read amateur who has been working on his own chart, and that of family and friends, since 2001 strongly (with a two year period before in the mid 1990's). The other authors I have read include Arroyo, Forrest, and bits and pieces of others, including works on Buddhist astrology and Vedic astrology. No sun sign stuff.

IN addition, I tend to filter things through my background in the sciences, and current studies in integrative medicine. I have looked forward to using astrology in some capacity when I start my practice as a licensed naturopathic physician, if only to help advise my patients how best to put that exercise program into practice!

So I got it, opened it, and started working through it. My immediate reaction to this book is "Yes, but......"

It's a big "but".

Look, I respect the efforts to revive traditional astrology. I think that part of what has kicked it into gear has been the increasing use of Vedic astrology (which looking at Ms. George's book, my immediate reaction is that the links between Vedic and ancient hellenistic astrology seem obvious, at least to me; no judgment made here as to which one "came first".) Obviously a fair amount of people want to know practical things, such as "what will happen?" rather than what their psychological tendencies and etc.

But Ms. George's book comes across as depressingly deterministic. And I think we need to realize something. The ancient world was one that thought of things as being pretty determined by the circumstances of one's birth - especially the Greeks. Do we really want to use interpretations and mind sets from a time and place that saw slavery and the subjugation of women as simply part of the natural order of things? That figured what you were born into was your destiny? This is a far cry from looking realistically at the circumstances of one's life and figuring out how to work with those things. I don't know about you, but my answer is no.

Ms. George does allow for the fact that people may not want to use deterministic interpretations, and might want to instead use the chart to pinpoint what one could work on. But at least at this point, her take seems to be "help the client to live a life in accord with the chart, and steer them away from things that aren't indicated in the chart."

You know, in that case, I might as well just put away, and forget about it. I already know where I'm suffering; if all the chart is going to do is say "Well, yes, you are suffering in this area, and that is that", why bother?

In that light, I think I'll go do something real. I may have just brought some years of study to an end.
