A good article.
However the rules for Indian /Vedic electional Astrology are different. It is believed that Sage Vasist wrote first treatise on Vedic electional astrology many centuries before Christ.
For differences in the two systems, one may log on to wikipedia: electional astrology.

 May also log on to
http://www.besttime.election.com
to get some overview of the Vedic electional astrology.

Thank you for the very informative article on electional astrology. I learned something I did not know regarding "sect" and I thought I knew everything!!

You mentioned that there are not many good books out there on the subject of election but I found one you may want to share with your readers. It is titled "Electional Astrology the art of timing." I think the publisher is Llewellyn. It is very well written and fills a much-needed void on this subject.

Keep up the good work Chris.

Hi Chris

I have been a long-time student of electional astrology and enjoy visiting your blog. I have just found an application for my iPhone that evaluates every day in the year based on electional astrology. It is a wonderful app and you may want to tell your readers about it because it is written by the same author who wrote "Electional Astrology the Art of Timing". The app is listed in iTunes as 2009 Electional Astrology Planning Guide. It's so easy to use and includes lots of other information besides daily evaluations. Check it out.

Thanks so much for your wonderful commentary.

But if these rules apply (btw I am not an astrologer) then 2009 must be the worst year for anyone to start an important venture because both Saturn and Jupiter are debilitated (sidereal). These two planets being the most important when electing a time for a business it makes sense that so many businesses have been failing lately and the economy is the way it is.

[...] The problem with this argument is that much of what made the original inauguration time so remarkable in the first place is completely lost in the second chart for the re-swearing of the oath, and in fact the second chart seems to be much more inauspicious than the first when using some of the common rules of electional astrology. [...]

Hi Chris,

You forgot to mention the most important rule of the rules: The election chart must not be considered solely, but in concordance with the natal chart. For only what is indicated in the nativity, or by the directions for some certain time, can take place in life.

Compare the radical chart and the electional chart.
In general it is not so good to place the electional ASC opposite or in square to the radical ASC - this would mean that the electional chart is more likely to show no effect, as the election is adversed to the natal chart. If for example in the nativity the ASC-ruler is at 10 Virgo, it is very good to place the electional ASC/MC near 10 Virgo, and so establish a connection with the radical chart.
