Gemini Lost – New Quasi-Astrologically Themed Computer Game

Posted by on October 20, 2009 at 2:16 pmNo Comments Yet

Gemini LostThere is a new quasi-astrologically themed computer game that was released recently called Gemini Lost.  I heard about it last month through an article on Todd Carnes blog, and I actually played the demo for a little while in order to see how the developers integrated astrology into it.   It turns out that the actual astrological content of the game is minimal, although there is one interesting astrological element that stands out at one point in the game.

Game Description

Here is a description of the game from one site:

While walking home with a group of friends, you discover a mysterious beam of light coming from an unexpected solar eclipse.  The light leads you to an ancient astrological site that suddenly transports you all to an unfamiliar world!  Stranded, you must take the lead and help your group create a new civilization.  Gather resources and food, build shelter, and conduct scientific research to figure out your new environment in Gemini Lost, a fun Strategy game!

The gist of the game is essentially that you have a village that you have to grow and maintain, and in the process you are trying to locate different pieces of a zodiac that has been scattered and hidden in the area that you are now inhabiting.  If you find all 12 pieces of the zodiac, then your villagers get to go home.

Here is a video of some of the game play:

A Humorous Take on Relationship Astrology

Locating the missing pieces of the zodiac would be just about the extent of the “astrological” content of the game in Gemini Lost,  however, there is an interesting twist.  In order to expand your village, you have to get the villagers to reproduce.   Gemini-lost-03-smallIt turns out that each of them has a specific astrological sign that they were born under, presumably their sun-sign or something, and they are only compatible with and able to marry other people with one of two specific zodiac signs.   So, for example, if person A’s sign is Pisces, they might only be compatible with person B if they are a Taurus or a Capricorn.

I’m not sure if the signs that are compatible are randomly chosen or follow some specific set of rules, but that isn’t really what is interesting.  What is interesting is simply the concept that only certain people in the village have matching zodiac signs, and they are the ones that can be together in a relationship, get married and have kids.

It is relatively easy to pair up the majority of the village’s inhabitants, but then there is always this one odd person whose zodiac sign doesn’t match up with any of the other villagers.  Thus, this person ends up growing old and eventually dying alone in the village.   There was something that was simultaneously humorous and depressing about this particular attempt by the designers to integrate some practical astrological concept or element into the game.

Conclusions

Ultimately that is just about the extent of the astrological content of the game though.  For the most part it is just a generic ‘strategy’ game, although in some ways there is even less strategy in the game than there is astrology.  The villager compatibility was an interesting attempt to integrate something astrological into a game, but I will be interested to see how game developers in the future might apply certain astrological concepts in more innovative and extensive ways.

If you feel like killing some time you can download the Gemini Lost demo or buy the game for $7 on the developer’s website.
